Chapter Fourteen

Shadow sat at the bar on their usual stools at The Wayward Son, and scanned the room.

It was Sunday lunchtime, and very busy. The smell of roast meat scented the air, and the pub was loud with chatter. The English loved their Sunday lunches. It was something she’d learnt very early on, and she had to admit it was a tradition she liked. Not right now, though. Niel’s breakfast had filled her up.

Zee headed over to take their order. “I should have known you’d come here. Pint of Skullduggery Ale, I presume.” He smiled at Briar. “And white wine?”

Briar laughed. “You know me so well.”

“How’s your patient?” he asked, filling her glass.

Briar wrinkled her nose. “Not being nearly as compliant as she should be.”

“Nothing new there, then.”

Shadow shot him a filthy look. “I’m right here!”

“I know. And here I was hoping for some peace and quiet.” He placed her pint in front of her. “Did you get in touch with El?”

Shadow bit back a rude response. She was trying to be less argumentative, and it didn’t sit easily with her. “She’s on her way. Is Alex here?”

“In the kitchen.” He leaned forward. “If you’re going to talk business, head to the rear lounge. There’s a table free. I’ll send El and Alex through.”

“Good suggestion,” Briar said, and grabbing her drink she led the way to the room Alex had spelled to keep quiet for the locals.

Within minutes El arrived, looking very glam for a Sunday, and Alex was right behind her. He slid into his seat staring at all three of them, intrigued. “You all look like you’re up to something!”

“Me?” Shadow said, wide -eyed. “I’m never up to anything!”

“Oh, please. Pull the other one!” Alex had shoulder-length dark hair and stubble always grazed his chin. He favoured old jeans and older t-shirts, and despite the wet, miserable day, he wasn’t wearing long sleeves, revealing his tattoos, although he had nowhere near as many as some of the Nephilim. “Zee has told me about your wayward ghost.”

“Ghost?” El said, suddenly paying attention.

“Should I wait for Avery or Reuben?” Shadow asked. Alex lived with Avery now, and El and Reuben were a couple. Together with Briar, they made up the White Haven Coven.

“No, Avery is seeing her grandmother, and Reuben is surfing,” Alex said, sipping his pint. “I’ll tell Avery later.”

El nodded. “I can fill Reuben in. Now, tell all! What’s happened?”

Shadow relayed how they’d found the tomb and released the spell on it, and then the attack by Kian’s ghost the night before. “Now we have to find Kian, and get him out of Mason’s body without hurting him. If he’s even still possessing him. We have no idea where he may be, but suspect he’ll probably come here, after me.”

“Wow.” El leaned back in her chair. “And you think this ghost is fey?”

“Yes. I can tell—just like you can tell that I’m not human without my glamour. There are subtle differences.”

“Not so subtle if you ask me,” Alex said.
